Why doesn't Bala defend himself by telling the villagers why he entered Gatani's house?

  1. I think he doesn't tell them because he thought they wouldn't believe him and he'd only look worse by making a lie.

  2. I agree with Matt, he would just look like an even bigger fool by telling a lie that no one believes. Otherwise I don't know why he didn't just tell the villagers the truth.

  3. I believe that they would think that he was telling a lie because he lost his honor. Or maybe he forgot about it and was not thinking when he left home in the first place. I know that I would never leave home even if I had lost my honor like him.

  6. I agree with Matt. I think Bala doesn't defend himself because he knows the villagers won't believe a filthy robber. They would simply think Bala was telling a childish lie which would make him feel worse. On page 153, Bala just brought inside the fish Gatani's wife caught for dinner to protect it from crows eating it while the family was away. It seems that Bala tried to do a good deed but it turned out to be a "horrible crime". Bala learned to mind his own business and to not interfere with anyone else's work.

  7. I agree with all of you guys. If the village thought Bala was telling a lie he would get less honor if thats possible since he lost his honor.

  8. I, too, agree with Matt. Bala was already in a hole, and he didn't want to get deeper. I happen to think that Bala is fairly wise, and so he prevented this from happening.

  9. I agree with evryone, i think that he didn't want to be even less respected, because everyone thinks he is a liar.
