I think Elya decided not to marry Myra because he knew she did not love him and she would rather recieve the fattest pig from either Igor or him despite their personality. In the book, Madame Zeroni tells Elya that he could marry a much smarter and brighter girl than Myra. He let his feelings get the best of him and decided to win Myra's hand just because of her beauty. I would not make such a foolish mistake even though he lost the competition to Igor.
I think that Riley is right. Elya is smart enough to know that Myra is just a pretty face. He realized that he didn't want to be stuck with her the rest of his life. After all, she didn't even love him, and as Madame Zeroni said "her head is as empty as a flower pot." I think that he was also outraged when Myra tried to pick the man she married by picking number between one and ten.
I think Elya remembered and finally understood what his mom meant when she was telling him to wait on another girl because your only 15 and she just has the looks and not the common sense and brains. If Elya was sick Myra would be clueless. And if Elya died, Myra would be so clueless she would pretty much be dead too.
I agree with you two in the book the only good quality Myra has is her looks, She coudnt work, wasnt smart, and couldnt provide for a family in any way. Elya was probably furious when Myra tried to pick between Igor and him by having them pick a number 1-10!
I think he decided not to marry her because he didn't care for her and once she decided to do the wedding by picking a number he relized she didn't love him and he thought she did.
My opinion is that if the woman he thought he was in love with loved him, she would've chosen him over the middle aged man anyday. elya thought it extremely dumb to choose the person that you're going to spend the rest of your life with by picking a number was really silly. he noticed that myra really does.t care about him.
