My Greatest Ambition by Morris Lurie

Read and answer the following questions in the comments section of the blog. Remember to provide support for your thinking and text evidence from the story for a complete response. Once you've responded, check back often and make comments to at least two others that move the thinking along.

Why does Morris grow out of his dream of being a comic strip artist after his encounter with Boy Magazine?

  1. Morris grows out of his dream of being a comic strip artist because Boy Magazine only accepted his first subscription but sent his second comic back. He thought he was going to be the permanent comic artist but the staff from Boy Magazine accepted multiple comics from different people.
Then, he began to dream of different wonderful jobs and forgot of his one greatest ambition. I used to want to be a NFL football player but now, my mind is full of alternative jobs like being a scientist or guitarist.

  2. I think that Morris grew out of comics because he realized that he had no future in it. He saw that companies were always moving around and that they were shutting down. On page 39 he said it was here today and gone tomorrow. He was not willing to risk his entire future on a small chance that he might make a living off of it.

  4. I think Morris grew out of his dream of becoming a comic strip artist because Boy Magazine got Morris all pumped up by printing his first comic. But then after he sent his second comic to Boy Magazine they discontinued his service and sent his comic back.

    INCOMPLETE!

  5. I agree with your response. The economy is very poor right now and companies are shutting down.

What did you like about the connection Riley made? Did it make you think of anything in your own life or other books you've read? Elaborate on your responses. Remember, the goal is to move the thinking along!

  7. I think Morris grew out of his dream because he thought he had no future with comics. I think he relized this after Boy Magazine ignored his second comic. He says on page 39 paragraph 2 that it is risky and unsure, one day on then one day off.

  8. Do you think that he made a wise choice or was he simply discouraged? How might this have had a different outcome if his parents were more supportive of him?

  9. I liked the connection Riley made because I could tell he put a lot of efert into it and I thought about the same thing that he did.

  10. CONTINUED

They didn't take his comic on page 39, which made him become down on himself. Because Boy Magazine discontinued publication he started feeling unsure of himself and gave up his dream of being a comic strip artist.

  12. I think Morris grew out of his dream to be a comic strip artist because on pg.39 he told himslf there was no future in it. He also said it was risky and unsure, and how its there today and gone tomorrow. also contributing to this is Boy Magazine rejected his second comic strip and that he decides to become a serious painter and I agree with Riley.

  13. Do you think he gave up too fast?! Do you think things would have been different if his parents supported his dreams?

    1. Yes i think that he gave up too fast .He should wait .May be that company was closed for 1 or 2 weeks he should write more and more best articles and that company may open any time and he can achieve his goal by selling that articles.

  14. I agree with football freak. Morris grows out of being a comic strip artist because he felt like nobody liked his comics anymore! I also agree with phoenix because on pg. 39 it DOES say that there is no future in it. I think he finally processed that! I think he DID give up too fast because you never know if someone actually like it. I think it WOULD help if his parents supported him.

  16. I agree with football Freak on this one. I think morris grows out of his dream of being a comic strip artistbecause Boy Magazine only accepted his firs magazine, and turned down his second. Then he realized that this was not the best job for him. I also think that he did not want this to be his job because his parents support was very poor, and his parents only cared about money, they did not support his dream.

  17. Morris's comic strip wasn't rejected. The boy magazine was just not printing their magazines anymore. it said that they liked his comic but they stopped printing.

  19. I believe that Morris grew out of his dream of being a comic strip artist because if you think about it, he talked about how everybody else in his class and school are dreamers, because they want to be big famous people. Like doctors, judges, and etc. So actullay if you think about what he said about dreamers 25% of those kids who thought that they were going to make their ambition worth the wait they had already gave up. As for Morris he gave up. Cause in the first part of the story people told Morris that it was just a phases that he was going though, which was the truth. So that is why i belive that Morris grew out of his dream of becoming a comic strip artist. =]

  26. i believe that the reason why he grew out of his dream of becoming a comic script artist was because he had just reached the realization that he was a dreamer. All along Morris was so immersed in his dream of being a comic script artist and so sure it would happen that his brain didn't process it as a dream even though it was. He saw it as a "Great Ambition" before he came to realize that he was a dreamer like everyone else in his neighborhood. he hated dreamers and that is what drove him to try so very hard to dismiss the dream of becoming a comic script artist.
